James Harvey Irvine, Sr. (1867-1947) as a young man. He inherited the Irvine Ranch on his 25th birthday, October 16, 1892 and in 1894 he founded the Irvine Company.

In 1888, James Harvey Irvine, Sr. (1867-1947) (at left with his friend, Harry Baechtel) rode from San Francisco to San Diego on high-wheeled bicycles known as velocipedes. This was a difficult undertaking given the rough and rutted roads that they traveled on. Irvine was 19 years old at the time.

A successful businessman, he acquired three ranchos (approximately 115,000 acres) in southern California along with brothers Thomas and Benjamin Flint and their cousin Llewellyn Bixby.
